5 Things to Do Daily for a Cleaner Home

In case you haven't been able to tell from my decluttered series, I'm slightly obsessed with keeping things cleaned and organized.  When I know that things are in order with my home, I feel so much more relaxed and able to focus on other things.  But here's a little secret: I don't spend all of my days scrubbing floors and toilets to keep it that way.  Instead, I have a handful of things that I try to do daily to keep the chaos of daily life under control.  I've found that doing these five little things can make such a huge difference!  So are you ready to keep your home in order?  Let's dive in:

1. Put things away as soon as you finish using them.  This is such a little thing, that makes a HUGE difference!  Instead of dumping my bag, jacket, and such on the table as soon as I come in the door, I put them away in the coat closet.  When I'm cooking, I put ingredients away as soon as I finish using them.  I even make sure that my cellphone charger gets put in the drawer it belongs in when I finish using it. Taking the few extra seconds to put things away as you go is by far the easiest way to make sure your home is in order.

2. Make a "clean sweep" before going to bed.  Each night, before I call it a day, I comb quickly through the house and make sure that certain things are taken care of, like no dirty dishes in the sink, any laundry folded and put away, living room throw pillows in place, etc.  It's like a backup plan for if #1 doesn't get done properly.  And let's be honest- waking up to a sink full of dirty dishes does not make for a happy morning!

3. Set (and stick to) a regular cleaning schedule.  I usually use Fridays for doing my thorough cleaning around the house.  That's when I take care of all the dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, and bathroom scrubbing.  And I make sure that I do those things every Friday.  But last month I discovered the Home Planner insert for my Happy Planner, and that's been pretty amazing.  It has a handy checklist for different cleaning tasks that I use to break up my cleaning schedule over the course of a week.  But no matter how you choose to do it, find a schedule that works for you, and stick to it.

4. Tackle messes as you see them.  If I notice a muddy footprint on the kitchen floor, a tumbleweed of dog hair, or a smudge of toothpaste on the sink, I take care of them immediately.  Little spot cleanings like this only take a few seconds and add up in the big picture of keeping your home clean.  So don't put off for tomorrow the little things that can be quickly taken care of today.

5. Don't underestimate the power of scent.  I will daily add a bit of fragrance to the air, whether I'm diffusing essential oils or just lighting up one of my favorite Bath and Body Works candles.  It lifts my mood and gives the house a fresh feel.  A fragrance is like the punctuation mark to a clean home...don't overlook using it in yours!
