(Real) Beauty

It's obvious that I'm a girly-girl.  I love meandering through the aisles at Ulta, picking out something pretty to wear in the mornings, and searching flea markets for unique pieces of jewelry.  It's fun to play and experiment and find things that give my confidence a boost.  But as much as I love these things, they aren't where real beauty comes from.  Real beauty comes from within.  Real beauty starts with letting the light of Christ shine out to others.

You see, it doesn't matter how much time you spend fixing your hair, or if you're wearing the latest, most expensive pair of shoes...if you're treating others with disrespect and putting yourself first, you're showing a kind of ugliness that no amount of concealer can hide.  But when you put others before yourself, that shows a kind of beauty that glows from within.  That shows real beauty.

Let's face it- clothes wear out, and makeup ends up being washed down the drain.  But the things that matter- the really beautiful things in life- are the things that we can't physically see.  Love.  Joy.  Peace.  Patience.  Kindness.  Goodness.  Faithfulness.  Gentleness.  Self-control.  Those are things that can't be sprayed on, or purchased from the mall.  Those are things that come from within.  Those are things that come from Christ.

Does that mean that putting effort into your physical appearance is wrong?  No, not at all.  That's the fun part of being a girl; the things that help us feel a little more confident before we walk out the door in the morning.  But it does become wrong when we rely on those things to be our one and only source of beauty.

So the next time you do a mirror check, take a moment to do a heart check as well.  Make sure that you're letting that light shine.  When you do, you will have a glow that could never be bottled up and sold.  You will be truly beautiful.  :)
